About Our Sheet Music for Early Music
Play Along Editions are designed to be used with Elizabethan Play Along recordings. We use Lilypond, the free, open source software, to print music on separate sheets (no bindings), designed to let you photocopy easily for study purposes. When appropriate, we use bar-lines between the staves to allow for ease of reading the rhythmic patterns of polyphony. To see viol consort music using this notation, please click on Gibbons, Fantasia 1.
As well as the traditional paper format, all of our editions are available online as Pdf files ready to be printed on your own computer (for this we charge no shipping and handling fee). By request, we will use larger fonts or different clefs. For a list of sheet music, click on sheet music in the Catalog above.
Play Along Editions grew out of our desire both to play lute music in staff notation, and to transcribe facsimiles and other string music into clefs suitable for viol players. To see a sample page of lute music, please click on Fantasia 10 by Luis Milan. Our mission now is to make this eclectic assortment of music available to others; our editions are suitable for harp and keyboard as well as lute (solo and ensemble) and viol. If you don’t find the music you need, try the Early Music Shop of New England or Charlie Ogle’s Boulder Early Music Shop
